First published in Tangier in 1964, Les Pommés de l’Orange tells the story of the orange in every possible way. It begins with Genesis, where Satan becomes the first broker, and the garden of the Hesperides, then turns to a run of pastiches: a “seventh book” of Rabelais, Goethe, Musset, Gide and a Série Noire thriller.
An inventory of citrus fruits, a short history of the orange and the meetings of the Shippers’ Committee follow, before the book closes with a Small Exporter’s Manual, a mischievous dictionary and a few poems for dessert. A playful look at 1960s Morocco and the export trade, where puns grow like oranges in the sun.
This new edition keeps the 1964 text with its original spelling and wordplay. In French.
